It is rare in history to find a woman killer, however there have been enough in history for trends to be formed. In Sophie Davison’s book Criminal Behaviour and Mental Health she discusses the rare female serial killers and where their motives lie. According to Davison, Mrs. Wright would be classified as a â€Å"Black Widow†, one who kills her family members. Mrs. Wright can also fit the description of a â€Å"Revenge Killer† since it was Mr. Wright who metaphorically took away her life, therefore she literally took his out of revenge. (Davison). Now with a motive, Mrs. Wright began her planning to get rid of her husband for the 30 years of psychological abuse she had to endure. A sociopath is defined as a person with a personality disorder manifesting itself in extreme antisocial attitudes and behavior and a lack of conscience. Glaspell then continues by having the women find strange sewing patterns in Mrs. Wright’s apron. As the women conclude, the method Mrs. Wright used in the sewing is called â€Å"knotting†. This is not only ironic, but presents a clue and the second part of the killer progression that Mrs. Wright was actually practicing the knot she would tie to use to kill her husband. Another hint of irony used is in this situation is that when a couple gets married it is called â€Å"tying the knot† which Mrs. Wright is also doing to end this marriage. The third clue that Glaspell gives is a bit of a mystery to the women of the play, yet would make sense in order to continue the progression of Mrs. Wright evolving into a killer. As the women continue to search through Mrs. Wright’s things they discover an empty bird cage. Mrs. Hale goes on to gives more insight of Mrs. Wright’s life before her marriage, â€Å"She was like a bird herself- real sweet and pretty, but kind of timid and fluttery† (Glaspell, 608). The two women eventually find the dead bird in Mrs. Wright’s sewing kit with a knot tied around its neck, similar to how Mr. Wright was strangled. Now there are two theories as to who is responsible for the death of the bird, the first being that it was Mr. Wright. There is some credibility to this theory when Mrs. Hale’s description of Mrs. Wright as a bird is considered. Obviously, Mr. Wright was not fond of a lively lifestyle which would be why he killed the bird the same way he took away Mrs. Wright’s free spirit. However, this would mean that killing the bird was a trigger to Mrs. Wright’s emotion, making her murder of her husband a violent reaction which does not fit her profile of the obedient abused wife. This theory would also give no significance to the knots in the apron. Rather it is the theory that provides Mrs. Wright as the bird killer that has more correlation to the other clues. There is much more evidence to support the Mrs. Wright theory, which leads one to believe that this is how Susan Glaspell intended for Trifles to progress. The first piece of evidence is that this is the third part of Mrs. Wright’s progression to a sociopath. This step is the first time she actually causes any kind of physical harm, in this case to an animal. According to The Humane Society of America, â€Å"65% of those arrested for animal abuse have also been arrested for assault and battery of others and of 36 questioned convicted murderers, about half admitted to harming animals.† This data shows a direct correlation between animal abuse and actual harm to others. Paradise Lost By Milton Leaving the underworld, once again, defeated by the heavens. Although John Milton's epic poem, Paradise Lost, is considered to be a tragedy, it displays some reminders of a comic end. In its tenth book, when Satan returns to hell, there is the realization of two of the poem's purposes: to "assert Eternal Providence" and to "justify the ways of God to men." Book Ten is the end of Satan's epic journey, portraying his return to hell. Throughout the poem, Satan, a figure of legendary signifigance, goes on a heroic quest. A quest in which he seeks power over God's creations, Adam and Eve, to prove he will not be subjected to God's ways. Satan's passing into God's paradise, the Garden of Eden, unveils his valour. He uses his superhuman forces to transform himself into a serpent and deceive Eve into eating a fruit from the forbidden tree of knowledge. This proves to be a tragic decision on his part, for when he returns home from his quest, he and the rest of the residents of hell are transformed into serpents. This is their punishment for betraying the ways of God. Satan's journey follows the usual tragic pattern, ending in horror. Due to fact that Satan is an evil character, and attempts to use God's own creation against him, it is difficult for some to believe that he is the hero in this epic story. In fact, Francis C. Blessington thinks of Satan as not a classical hero but a classical villain: Satan is made the archetype of the sophistical rhetoric, the shallow egotism, and the Stajan 2 destructive pride, the vices of the classical epic as well as of the classical world. In addition, he is the perversion of the classical heroic virtues. He often begins by resembling a victim, sometimes even a perversion of that.... [He is] not a classical hero but a classical villain who unheroically defeats creatures far below him in stature (18). Though he may not seem to be a hero to the conventional person, he still is the hero to the many leaders and followers in the depths of hell. He believes that God is wrong in his ways, and therefore tries to build an empire to replace the one in heaven. He has all of the characteristics of a heroic figure; "Indeed, you can't be really bad unless you do have most of the virtues. Look at Milton's Satan for example. Brave, strong, generous, loyal, prudent, temperate, self-sacrificing" (Bush 72). He is the heroic figure, who believes that he can be better than God. However, he finds that he is not powerful enough, and is brought to a tragic end. Although Satan and the rest of his followers are tragically defeated, there are still reminders of comedy toward the end of this epic. When Satan sets out on his quest, his goal is to corrupt Adam and Eve, and persuade them to betray God. He accomplishes this task, and rejoices in victory: For in possession such, not only of right, I call ye and declare ye now, returned Successful beyond hope, to lead ye forth Triumphant out of this infernal pit Abominable, accursed, the house of woe, And dungeon of our tyrant!" (Milton, X. 461-466). This accomplishment in itself is a huge deal for Satan and his followers. Satan persuades the naive Eve into thinking that if she disobeys God, and eats an apple from the tree of knowledge, life will improve. So as a punishment, God gives the snakes and serpents, "parched with scalding thirst and hunger," sodom thirst-quenching apples (Milton, X. 556). The Basic Plot Shortly after the death of Cardinal Wolsey, Sir Thomas Moore, a wealthy lawyer and loyal subject of King Henry VIII, accepts the title of Chancellor of England. With that honor comes an expectation. The King expects More to sanction the divorce and his subsequent marriage to Anne Boleyn. More is caught between his obligations to the crown, his family, and the tenants of the church. Open disapproval would be an act of treason. Public approval would defy his religious beliefs. Therefore, More chooses silence, hoping that by staying quiet he can maintain his honesty and avoid the executioner as well. Unfortunately, ambitious men such as Thomas Cromwell are more than happy to see More crumble. On many levels, Oliver is not a believable character, because although he is raised in corrupt surroundings, his purity and virtue are absolute. Throughout the novel, Dickens uses Oliver's character to challenge the Victorian idea that paupers and criminals are already evil at birth, arguing instead that a corrupt environment is the source of vice. At the same time, Oliver's incorruptibility undermines some of Dickens's assertions. Oliver is shocked and horrified when he sees the Artful Dodger and Charley Bates pick a stranger's pocket and again when he is forced to participate in a burglary. Oliver's moral scruples about the sanctity of property seem inborn in him, just as Dickens's opponents thought that corruption is inborn in poor people. Furthermore, other pauper children use rough Cockney slang, but Oliver, oddly enough, speaks in proper King's English. Dickens's Victorian middle-class readers were likely to hold opinions on the poor that were only a little less extreme than those expressed by Mr. Bumble, the beadle who treats paupers with great cruelty. Given the strict morals of Dickens's audience, it may have seemed necessary for him to make Oliver a saintlike figure. Given the different speeds at which people may develop both physically and intellectually, any form of explicit age limit may be arbitrary and irrational. Children do not deserve to be exposed to criminal punishment in the same way as adults. Children have not had experience of life, nor do they have the same mental and intellectual capacities as adults. Persons aged 15 to 19 years are more likely to be processed by police for the commission of a crime than are members of any other population group. In reference to the case with the 6 yr. old shooting his classmate, I believe he should have some sort of punishment. The young boy had a scuffle the day before and went home and because of his environment and upbringing he knew that a gun was dangerous and can cause harm to another person. The young boy at some point had to think about his actions and decided to take the weapon to school and later, shooting the young classmate which means the young 6 yr. old practiced on pulling the trig ger. Sure, you have an innocence factor here and each state sets the age limit on what age to charge a child with a criminal act. Age and criminal responsibility is a really touchy topic for many any children under the age of 7 and in the United States the criminal justice system can charge a youth with a criminal crime at the age of 6 years of age. I know of two cases where six year old boys were convicted on criminal charges in the state of California. I believe that the 6 yr. old in the course readings should’ve been court ordered to undergo professional counseling or treatment. If a punishment was not something the state wanted to issue, I definitely would argue that the youth was exposed to a household where guns and drugs were prevalent and the youth himself in my opinion may have suffered from some sort of PTSD. The classmate that was shot has a family and that family needs justice. Justice would not be served if the six year old walks away free. Charging the 19 yr. old in the house with guns and drugs does not solve the crime that took place at the school. There is an age limit for holing a child accountable for criminal responsibility and in this case, the youth should’ve been charged. The youth should’ve undergone a session to determine if he was mentally aware and then the state should’ve charged the young boy.
